A myomectomy is performed to remove uterine fibroids, which are benign growths that form around and in the uterus. Fibroids, which usually occur during childbearing years, can lead to pelvic pain, as well as heavy periods and pregnancy complications. There are a variety of ways to treat uterine fibroids, but if you want the opportunity to have children in the future, board-certified gynecologist Dr. Linda Sodoma suggests a myomectomy. For more information on myomectomies, contact Life Care for Women in Gilbert, AZ.

Fibroids can cause unnecessary pain and discomfort that our Gilbert, AZ patients should not have to suffer through. Getting a myomectomy with Life Care For Women can provide you many benefits, some of which include:

  • Relieves pain, discomfort, and cramping
  • Minimally invasive option that gets you back to normal life
  • Removal of benign or malignant options
  • Restore fertility potential

If you have uterine fibroids, we provide a variety of treatments based on your particular condition, such as the type and size of the fibroids. Myomectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure at our Gilbert, AZ office and is usually performed using the da Vinci® robotic surgery, a laparoscopic treatment. This involves using a small incision and is considered minimally invasive, leading to a shorter recovery time. Once we make the incision, Dr. Sodoma will remove the fibroid, then stitch your incision up. From there, you'll be released to go home to rest and recover. We will provide you with at-home care instructions to help you heal successfully, which usually takes between 2 – 4 weeks.

Best doctor and best staff. They are always available and incredibly knowledgeable. I always recommend them. Incredibly friendly front desk staff as well!

About Us
How long will my recovery be?

Recovery time for a myomectomy with laparoscopy can vary, but generally, it is quicker and involves less pain than recovery from an open surgery. Most patients can expect to return home on the same day or the day after the procedure. Typically, normal activities can be resumed within one to two weeks, although heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for about four weeks to allow the body to heal properly.

Are there any side effects?

A laparoscopic myomectomy may be less invasive and generally associated with a quicker recovery and fewer complications than open surgery, but there are still potential side effects to consider, including pain and discomfort, bleeding and injection, scar tissue, recurrence of fibroids, and other surgical risks. Patients should discuss these potential side effects with their healthcare provider to have a clear understanding of what to expect and how to handle any complications that may arise post-surgery. Regular follow-ups are essential to monitor healing and address any concerns quickly.

Is a myomectomy painful?

During the initial recovery phase, patients might experience abdominal pain and discomfort as the small incisions heal. The intensity of the pain can vary based on the number of fibroids removed, their location, and the individual's pain tolerance. Most pain can be effectively managed with medications prescribed by the doctor, and these usually include over-the-counter pain relievers or sometimes stronger prescription painkillers. Additionally, there may be some bloating and a sensation of fatigue as the body heals. It's important for patients to follow their doctor’s recommendations regarding rest, activity levels, and the use of pain medication to manage symptoms effectively. With appropriate care, the intensity of pain typically decreases significantly within the first week after surgery.
