With October recognized globally as World Menopause Month, it is only fitting that we take this time to remind ourselves of all the exciting things there are to look forward to in this season of life, as well as to explore the support options available to women struggling with the unwanted consequences and side effects of menopause. At Life Care for Women in Gilbert, AZ, board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Linda I. Sodoma believes that women should be celebrated at every stage in life and is committed to supporting patients throughout their journey with menopause and helping them feel more like themselves once again.

What is menopause?

Menopause refers to the time in a woman’s life with her menstrual cycle stops due to a natural decline of the female hormone estrogen. To “officially” reach menopause, a woman should not have had a period for 12 consecutive months. The early stages of menopause, known as perimenopause, may be characterized by changes in the woman’s menstrual cycle, such as spotting, heavy bleeding, irregular bleeding, and missed periods.

At what age does menopause happen?

On average, women typically reach menopause around age 50.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Menopause symptoms can be uncomfortable and highly disruptive to a woman’s life, often preventing her from enjoying or even engaging in her favorite activities. Some of the most commonly reported symptoms and side effects of menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Weight gain or weight loss resistance
  • Loss of bone mass (osteoporosis)
  • Thinning hair
  • Increased facial hair growth
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Brain fog
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Low libido
  • Urinary incontinence

How can I get relief from menopause symptoms?

While some women find it difficult to ask for help or discuss their menopause symptoms, it is important to remember that we are here to help. Our caring team offers a number of care and support options to help you get the menopause symptom relief you deserve so that you can get back to enjoying all that life has to offer. One of the most popular and effective treatment options for women going through menopause (or after menopause) is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). During BHRT, tiny pellets containing plant-based hormones are inserted beneath the patient’s skin and deliver a consistent dose of bioidentical, custom-compounded hormones in order to rebalance hormone levels and mitigate menopause symptoms.

For patients with specific concerns about urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and other side effects of menopause, Dr. Sodoma may recommend complementary treatments – like the EMSELLA® Chair – to further boost the results of hormone replacement therapy.

During your initial consultation for menopause care in Gilbert, AZ, Dr. Sodoma will evaluate your symptoms, discuss your concerns, review your health and medical history, and create a custom-tailored support plan that best meets your needs.
